Scaling analysis of convective solute transport and segregation in Bridgman crystal growth from the doped melt

چکیده
2014 Convective transport is well known to have a decisive influence on the macrosegregation encountered in metallic or semi-conductor crystals grown from an impure or doped melt. In the present paper, this problem is studied with the help of an order of magnitude analysis of the set of balance equations for mass, momentum and solute in the melt and at the growth interface. The different solute transport regimes are defined and the scaling laws of the solute boundary layer extent are obtained in each regime. Finally, the corresponding types of macrosegregation in the solidified crystal are derived. Our predictions compare favorably with the results of numerical simulations and ground-based as well as microgravity experiments. Thus our analysis provides a simple way to predict macrosegregation as a function of the physical properties of the system as well as the imposed experimental conditions : sample dimensions, growth rate, thermal gradients, gravity orientation and level. The extension of the method to other crystal growth situations is suggested. J. Physique 47 (1986) 1001-1014 JUIN 1986,:

Reversing radial segregation and suppressing morphological instability during vertical Bridgman crystal growth by rotation
During vertical Bridgman growth of an alloy crystal, local accumulation of solute at the interface center due to buoyancy often causes formation of a deep depression or pit and accelerates morphological instability. Through visualization of the freezing interface during directional solidification of succinonitrile containing ethanol on a rotating table, it was shown that rotation about the ampo...
متن کاملGrowth of CsI(Tl) crystals doped with Ca and Tm and investigation of its scintillation characteristics
In this work, the growth of CsI(Tl) crystals as gamma detector was performed using vertical Bridgman method with Ca and Tm co-dopants. For evaluation of the growth crystals, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence and thermoluminescence spectra as well as recorded gamma spectra were employed. In addition, the scintillation properties including energy resolution, scintillation decay time, abs...
متن کاملBreakdown of Burton-Prim-Slichter approach and lateral solute segregation in radially converging flows
A theoretical study is presented of the effect of a radially converging melt flow, which is directed away from the solidification front, on the radial solute segregation in simple solidification models. We show that the classical Burton-Prim-Slichter (BPS) solution describing the effect of a diverging flow on the solute incorporation into the solidifying material breaks down for the flows conve...

In this study, the scintillation and optical properties of pure and silver doped potassium chloride (KCl:Ag) single crystals were reported. Pure and doped KCl bulk single crystals with a good optical quality and free from cracks were grown from the melt using Czochralski technique. Different analysis methods were used to study the optical and scintillation properties of the grown crystals. The ...
متن کاملCrystal-Growth Technology for Ternary III-V Semiconductor Production by Vertical Bridgman and Vertical Gradient Freezing Methods with Accelerated Crucible Rotation Technique
Substrates of III-V ternary compound semiconductors with variable bandgaps orlattice constants still remain very attractive for a variety of electronic, optoelec-tronic, and photovoltaic devices. However, the commercial technology for growinglarge-diameter, compositionally homogeneous, bulk III-V ternary crystals has notbeen fully developed. This chapter discusses the fundamenta...
